There's a moment at the end of every long day when you open your front door. And in that moment, your home either gives something back to you, or it takes a little more out of you.
I know that moment well. I spent over thirty years walking into corporate buildings. Gray carpet. Beige walls. Fluorescent lights. Rooms designed to keep everybody calm and nobody happy. Somewhere along the way I made myself a promise. My home will never feel like that. My home is going to lift me the second I walk in.
Turns out there's a name for what I've been doing all these years. They call it dopamine decor. And in 2026 it's everywhere, because people are finally saying out loud what I've known for a long time. Your home is supposed to make you feel something good.
What is dopamine decor?
Dopamine decor is decorating on purpose for joy. Color that wakes you up. Shapes that make you smile. Pieces that remind you of who you are, not pieces that match what everyone else bought. It's the opposite of a house full of gray and greige where everything is safe and nothing is you.
And let me be clear about something, because people get this wrong. Dopamine decor is not clutter and it's not chaos. It's intentional. One bold rug in the right room does more than ten timid things scattered everywhere. Joy has a plan.
Start with one piece that does the talking
You don't redo your whole house. You pick one room, and you give it one piece that makes you feel something the moment you see it.
For me, that piece is almost always a rug, because a rug changes the whole temperature of a room. Something like my blush and gold marble rug that looks like a sunset poured across your floor, or the navy and peach checkerboard that gives a room instant retro confidence. Put one of those down in a neutral room and watch the room come alive without you touching another thing.

Here's something nobody gives you permission for, so I will. You're allowed to be a grown woman with a silly goose pillow on her good couch. You're allowed to hang a retro atomic cat in your kitchen because it makes you laugh every morning while the coffee brews.
The homes that feel the best are never the most serious ones. They're the ones where you can tell somebody real lives there, somebody with a sense of humor and a story. That's the whole secret of this trend. It's not about the color pink or the color yellow. It's about the courage to let your home tell the truth about you.
Put the joy where you can touch it
Color you can feel goes even deeper than color you can see. A plush blanket in a bold wildflower print thrown over the arm of the couch says come sit down, you made it home. Where my joy comes from
I'll tell you something personal, because this blog carries my name. The joy in my home has a source that runs deeper than any color on any rug. My faith carries me through everything, and it always comes first in my life. How to start this weekend
